Intelligence, as a concept, has been around for ages. From the Ancient Greeks and their philosophers to the scientific giants of today, it has been well established that the people in these fields are intelligent. Even though philosophers were sometimes considered mad by other people, their ideas still persisted to this day. Students who could understand the nuances in physics, chemistry and biology are considered smart. There are so many other ways that we can use to determine if a person is intelligent. It can be as simple as those ideas that we have presented before. However, what is intelligence?
There are a lot of definitions when it comes to intelligence. Some say that if you understand complicated concepts then you are already intelligent. Others point out that learning to read and write is already considered as a sign of intelligence. Following instructions and understanding simple commands is also considered as intelligent. The people who are very proficient in learning instruments at such a young age are branded as geniuses. Those who are excellent in memorization and calculations are the same as well. This list could go on and on but all of us have different views when it comes to this “simple” concept. Theories about intelligence are quite common. In the field of psychology, it is a whole branch in itself with countless theorists, scientists and sociologists giving their take on intelligence. One of the most well-known theories is the theory of multiple intelligences. Proposed by Howard Gardner in the early 1980’s, it states that there are many types of intelligences in each person. Specifically, there are 8 types in his original theory. Since then, another type was added in 2009. You can be good in one type, poor on the other and average on the rest. This is why you might see a lot of math geniuses who are not good at speech and interacting with the people. It can also be the other way around. As you can see, intelligence as a concept is already full of so many ideas that you do not know which one to follow. However, one thing is for sure: our intelligence is deeply tied in our minds. It is the seat of our reasoning and governor of our entire bodies. It guides us through our decisions and helps us move the right muscle for any action. With this, we use our energy to think, feel and understand other people. We are not animals ruled by our instincts as we have evolved from that kind of thinking. With our opposing thumbs and developed brain, we have now conquered the known world. We have even reached outer space. These achievements may not have been possible without human intelligence. In this day and age, everyone is already aware that we have our own intelligence. As an evolving species though, there is still some room for improvement. Our brains also lose cells and degenerate as we grow older and that is something we cannot avoid. We also need an extra boost when doing a mentally-challenging task. There are medicines that can help you with these problems, and they are called nootropics.
Most nootropics can be found in nature, and they have been in use for about a millennium. Ginkgo biloba, bacopa monnieri, and many herbs were said to improve brain functioning and can even regenerate lost nerve cells. These wonder herbs have been exported from country to country and many have been enjoying their effects. There are even scientific studies about their effects, and most said that they did help in improving mental functions.
However, did you know that coffee is also considered as a nootropic? Coffee, aside from being a tasty beverage, really helps in our thinking ability. Drinking it in the morning boosts our thinking ability, perks us up and keeps us active. It may not be much because its effect is rather temporary but its effects last throughout the day when we need it the most. Be careful though, as too much coffee is also not good for you. Drink what you need and enjoy it while you can. Read more about coffee here.
It is also unsurprising that many people developed supplements that are easy to take by humans. These nootropics are developed usually for the treatment of mental illness but some of them actually helps in our cognition. Modafinil is one of them, and it has a lot of uses. It was first developed to help people from various sleep disorders. It is said that it affects the sleep-wake cycle or our biological clock to a point where sleepiness can be avoided. This is especially beneficial for people who suffer from sleep apnea, sleep work disorder and narcolepsy. Research studies have found no evidence as to how it really works in the brain, but its effects are observable especially to those suffering from said disorders. As with any type of medication, always go and see a doctor before taking in any kind of prescription meds. Even the most harmless of vitamins can be dangerous if you do not know the dosage and the proper time to take it. Ask your doctor about most of the medical queries that you have for your own peace of mind.
