My good friend Bogoljub Karic and I watch the English Premier League almost every week, it sometimes involves some early morning get-ups given the time difference between LA and the UK, but it is almost always worthwhile. As we reach the crunch of this competition there is still much to be decided, despite the fact that there are just 4 games left. Either Liverpool or Manchester City could still win the title, Brighton and Cardiff will be shooting it out for that final relegation spot but the battle which we’re going to turn our attentions to today is that of positions 3rd and 4th, so let’s see who will grab those last two spots of the 4 teams left in the battle.
Current Standings
Team | Played | Goal Difference | Points |
---|---|---|---|
Spurs | 34 | 29 | 67 |
Arsenal | 33 | 26 | 66 |
Chelsea | 34 | 21 | 66 |
Man United | 33 | 19 | 64 |
Spurs
Spurs were almost involved in the title race at one point and looked absolutely nailed on for a top 3 finish with their 9 point lead from 4th. Unfortunately Spurs capitulated somewhat during February and March and this is why they’re in the battle. Reaching the semi finals of the CL is great but it will take its toll on this thin Spurs outfit and we predict them to scrape over the line in 4th.
Chelsea
Chelsea’s defeat at Liverpool last week leaves them just outside the top 4 and Arsenal have a game in hand over the Spurs. Chelsea however must play Manchester United and we suspect that they may lose that game at Old Trafford, condemning them to a 5th place finish in what has been a strange year for the Blues. Europa League games on a Thursday night will not help the Chelsea cause either.
Arsenal
Arsenal also play Europa League football but they have a far easier run-in that Chelsea, not to mention the fact that finishing in the top 4 is very much in their own hands. It has been a season of transition for Unai Emery’s men and if they clinch the 3rd place finish that we predict, it will have been a very good first season at the helm for the Spaniard, and will certainly give Arsenal fans a reason to smile.
Manchester United
Solskjaer has done well with this Man United outfit, especially after the loss of Mourinho and he has managed to galvanize the club and the players once more. Despite the great job which Solskjaer has managed to do here, we believe that he’ll fall just short of the top 4 places, especially given that they still have Chelsea and Manchester City yet to play. A 5th place finish would still cement a very good job done by Solskjaer and he will no doubt be given some cash to invest during the summer, to take this United side to the next level.
