How to Enter a Math Teaching Career
The process of becoming a math teacher follows 4 consecutive steps, from training through job acquisition.
First, you’ll need to acquire a bachelor’s degree. Interestingly, your major doesn’t have to pertain to mathematics to apply for a state teaching license. Doing so anyway could be an advantage though, with examples including a B.S. in Mathematics Education or a B.S. in Elementary education with a focus on math.
The second step is to complete a student teaching internship program for the grade level you want to get certified in. Depending on where you live, this may or may not be compulsory! Either way, you’ll receive expert supervision and tutelage for a period of 8 to 12 weeks, learning the ins and outs of how to teach math in the process.
Third, you’ll have to pass the test for teachers. Requirements vary by state but tend to include a basic skills exam alongside competency exams on the subject you’ll be teaching. Assuming you pass, you can then apply for your state teaching certificate- a license that makes you eligible to apply for math positions in your state!
