One of the worst things that you can do when owning a small business is not to educate your employees about the types of data breaches they may encounter and how hackers achieve these breaches. From emails to text messages, hackers use many ways to infiltrate and take over a system through seemingly harmless maneuvers.
Part of educating your staff is instructing them to never open emails when they are suspicious about where they came from. It also addresses the proper procedures to use when handling sensitive information about the clients that you service or business accounts.
2. Have A Security Team In Place
Your security team’s job is to monitor all areas of your business that contain sensitive and encrypted information. Not only will they monitor and fend off possible attacks, but they will also train themselves in the art of detecting potential attacks.
This group will also be put in charge of annual testing for the company. This means that every so often, they will send out a test fishing email, and any employee that clicks the link inside the email will meet with the team for a training refresh on hacker tactics.
3. Ensure Your Hardware is Secured
If a hacker isn’t skilled in the art of hacking your data virtually, the next step is to steal the devices that the information is stored on. This gives them the time that they wouldn’t have if they were hacking the system from a different location.
To solve this problem, ensure that all of the devices you use that contain sensitive information are locked away or secure so that they can’t be moved. This may mean at the end of the day wiping all of the memory on the devices and storing all data in one location or physically locking the devices to whatever they are sitting on.
4. Continuously Update Firewalls
Every so often, your firewall should be updated. This also applies to any passwords that your staff uses to enter the system. When you deal with cyberattacks and use the same firewall, it can make it easier for the hacker to breach the wall.
Make it more challenging for them by updating your system password and firewall every couple of months.
