On the 20th of March, the world celebrated the International Day of Happiness- it might sound like a made-up Instagram celebration day. . . but it’s actually a real thing! Blimey, but what is it? Indeed, it’s a day to be happy! Since 2012, the United Nations celebrates this day as a way to emphasise on the importance of happiness in our daily lives. Whether you’ve celebrated this event or not, the holiday comes with a hard question: What is it to be really happy? Given that happiness is subjective, the answer will obviously vary. Most researchers agree that happiness is simply having more positive emotions on a daily basis than negative ones.
For the International Day of Happiness 2018, the United Nations organised many events in which people across the world could participate. However, happiness is seemingly within arm’s reach and it can be achieved any day. Want to know how to be a little happier every now and then?
Relationships
As humans, we are bonded by various relationships which make our happiness. After all, close relationships with friends and family members provide us with support and love. And, wider connections with social peers gives us a sense of belonging. As per researches, stronger relationships lead to happier, longer and healthier life. So, it’s significant to make your relationships stronger and to make new connections.
Action– Give a bell to a family member or a friend to know how they are doing. Learn the name of someone new at work, on the streets or on the train.
Acceptance
Accept to love yourself just the way you are. As a matter of fact, no one is perfect, even if it appears as such on their social media profiles. Many of us tend to compare our real lives to the carefully edited lives of other people. And, it’s not a good way to live as it’s harder to be happy if you focus on your flaws rather than your strength.
Action – Ask someone who knows you jolly well to tell you what they think your strengths are and focus only on those.
Mindfulness
Happiness is overlooked if you are always consumed by your thoughts. The past is a foreign island and dwelling in it, does not change it. And, worrying about the future won’t do any good as well. It’s better to stay in the present and collect small moments of happiness as you go – this shapes a better and happier future.
Action– Try meditation or other activities which lets you empty your mind.
Adventure
Get outside your comfort zone and increase your knowledge, resilience and emotional flexibility. Being out in nature helps feeling better and improves your health. Adventure does not always mean travelling the world or indulging into extreme sport- at times, it’s just about escaping the routine.
Action– Go into the woods, without any agenda and with the simple aim to be there. And the scary part- leave your phone at home!
