Skincare is a delicate subject, with most people suffering from a form of acne at some point in their lives. In addition to pimples, a lot of people also suffer with conditions like hyperpigmentation, dryness, oiliness, or dullness. For most people, their skin is a source of low self-esteem and confidence issues, and with millions of different products and ‘hacks’ out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to start.
Some people will recommend you use the most expensive products and have a 12-step routine day and night, whilst others swear by a simple cleanser and lots of water. In short, everyone’s skin is different which means what works for one person might not work for you. That being said, there are a handful of tips that are universally agreed upon by dermatologists.
With this in mind, we’ve collated a handful of these tips and recommendations that you can easily implement into your skincare routine and that should help you see results of some sort. It’s work noting, these are not targeted tips, so if you’re suffering from a specific issue, it’s best to consult with your own dermatologist to find a more accurate solution.
1. Use cleansers in addition to makeup wipes
Makeup wipes get a bad reputation in a world where cleansing balms and foams are the new norm, but this doesn’t mean they’re necessarily bad. In fact, most dermatologists recognize that makeup remover wipes are effective at removing a dirt and makeup at a surface level. They certainly do a good job of getting rid of mascara, foundation, and the like.
That being said, makeup wipes don’t remove the deep layer of makeup and dirt on your face. So, to ensure your face is as clean as can be without having to spend a long time using multiple cleansers, use a makeup wipe first and then wash your face with a cleanser. There are lots of targeted cleansers available from places like Skin Addict, or you can use the double cleanse method with a generic wash.
2. Allow each product to absorb into your skin before you apply the next
One mistake a lot of people make is applying their skincare products one after the other with little time in-between (mostly because everyone’s always in a rush which is understandable). However, if you want to get the most out of your products, make sure you wake up a little bit earlier so you can allow two to three minutes between each product.
Doing so will prevent products from being diluted and allow them to really absorb into your skin.
3. Apply a sheet mask over your moisturizer for increased hydration
If you suffer from dry skin and struggle to get that dewy skin look, try putting your moisturizer on and a sheet mask over the top before you go to bed. This double whammy of moisture will see your skin glowing in the morning.
4. Use sunscreen every day
By far the most important skincare tip that everyone should implement regardless of skin type or problem is to wear sunscreen every day. Whether it’s the height of summer or the peak of winter, if you want to prevent fine lines, sun damage, and skin cancer, make sure you’re applying sunscreen every morning before you leave the house.
Some moisturizers have SPF in them, but if yours doesn’t, make sure you add on a specific sun cream after the rest of your skincare routine but before your makeup primer.
Summary
These skincare tips might not address specific issues you have, but they will ensure your skin is healthy, hydrated, and protected from the sun which will give you a good base to progress from.
