Planning on moving this summer? No one ever necessarily enjoys the process of the move, but here are seven pro tips for making moving easy this summer.
Millions of people move every year, and it seems as though summer is the most popular season to pick up and head off for greener pastures. If you’re planning on packing your bags this sunny season, you’re probably dreading the process.
After all, moving can be downright stressful.
Fortunately, making moving easy (or easier at least) is possible with a little bit of planning and the right tips. In this post, we share our top bits of advice in hopes that we can take some of the stress out of your big day!
1. Loop in Your Utility Companies
We can’t tell you how many movers have moved to their new place only to find that their utility companies from their old place are still charging them. Don’t fall into that trap!
The moment you have a moving day set, call your utility companies (electric, gas, water, internet) and let them know you’re relocating so they can cancel service on the appropriate day.
2. Plan on Donating
Before you transport all of your junk from your old house to your new one, think! Wouldn’t it be better to start your life off fresh?
We think so and to that end, advise that you donate as much as possible. Whatever you can’t donate, you can call in the best removal company in your area to pick up and toss.
3. Nab Free Packing Supplies
You’d be shocked by how much boxes can cost when you buy them at an office supply store. Save yourself some money and check out the back of supermarkets to see if they have used boxes laying outside.
If you want to be cordial, ask to speak to a store manager and request permission to use their discarded boxes.
4. Separate Your Most Precious Items
Things get lost during moves. To make sure that the items most important to you don’t suffer that fate, move them to a safe location like a friend’s house ahead of your big day.
That way, you can safely retrieve your valuables after everything else has been placed in your new home.
5. Always Run a Final Check
Before you turn over your old house keys, always do a final walkthrough to make sure every nook and cranny is cleaned out. You’d be surprised by how many people end up leaving something important in the back of a cupboard or under a sink.
6. Eliminate Your Distractions
On moving day, your goal should be to get done as quickly as possible. Anything that works against that goal, including pets and kids, should be taken out of the equation.
To that end, if possible, try to leave kids/pets with a sitter and let your focus for the day be more on moving and less on managing others.
7. Hire Movers
There’s no easy moving trick that’s more effective than hiring movers. If you can afford to bring a team on to do the work for you, do it.
Believe us when we say that your time and peace of mind is almost certainly worth the price.
Making Moving Easy Mostly Comes Down to Planning
The better you plan, the less difficulty you’ll run into when moving. So, do what you can to coordinate your move well ahead of your big day and prepare to save yourself some headache!
