Do you ever find yourself reflecting on your life and wondering how you can make the world a better place?
Most people hope their lives make a positive impact on the world. They see the people around them making impressions on the world, and they want to have left it a little better than it was. This is an admirable ambition, and many believe it the primary purpose of their life to enact positive change.
We’re all on this planet beautiful–and often, difficult–planet together, and our actions impact each other. As such, every person should carefully consider how they’re going to use their lives to make the world a better place. Yet, many get caught up in the busyness of their own lives and wonder how they can impact others positively.
Below, we’ll give you suggestions on how to make a positive impact.

Listen to Your Heart
Although leaving a positive impact on the world often involves serving others, you should first look inward and ask yourself whether or not there’s something you want to do.
Why? Shouldn’t you just try to do everything you can do?
Many different, urgent causes need people’s help. This means many different ways to positively impact the world exist. While you could give to as many of them as possible, it’s extremely difficult for one person to help every cause out there, unless they have unlimited resources.
As such, pay attention to the causes that really get you fired up. Do you love advocating for animals in shelters? Do you want to help refugees or feed the homeless?
No matter what it is, make a note of it, and then research which organizations address these situations. If no one has, consider starting your own initiative!
What If You Can’t Think of Anything?
If you can’t think of anything right away, don’t worry! You still have valuable skills you can lend to people in need.
Think about what you love to do or what you excel at. Do you find yourself always wanting to tend to your garden? Do you have a degree in a specific field, such as medicine, education, or technology? Have people always told you you’re good with words?
Non-profits often need people with a variety of skills. Even if their main goal is to advocate for people in need, someone still needs to weed the lawn in front of their office, or they may even need people to proofread their publications or work on their IT needs.
No matter what skills you have, reach out to the charities around you and ask them if they could use your help. If they don’t have any need for you right now, ask them to put you on a volunteer list so they can call on you when needed.
Show Up for People
When considering the impacts they make, many people fail to consider the people immediately around them.
Even though it might seem good and glamorous to go and fight for a large cause, life is often difficult, and the people around you face hardships. To start making a difference, show up for them. Give support to those in need and celebrate successes.
Most people want to know someone cares about them, so being there for them often makes all the difference.
Be a Good Friend
Many people just want a kind person by their side, someone who they feel they can trust no matter what happens.
If you want to make a difference in the lives of people, but no one in your life has gone through a hard time, offer to meet someone for coffee and ask them about themselves. This often makes people feel loved.
Don’t know who to call? Try visiting people in the nursing home and making new friends there!
Volunteer
Do you have some extra time on your hands? Do you want to use that space in your schedule to make a difference?
If so, find some local volunteer opportunities in your community. Charities that help children and other organizations ask volunteers to perform various tasks pertinent to the work they do, and you have the chance to take place in important services for your area.
Donate
Do you sometimes find you have extra money after all of your bills have been paid?
Use some of that money to donate to organizations that have missions you love! Most charities survive on donations. When you give financially, then, you don’t just ensure they continue to make an impact. You also give them the ability to keep running their operations!
Pursue a Career Working with Non-Profits
Of course, not everyone finds themselves drawn to working with non-profits, and that’s fine. But if you already want to consider a career change, or if you find yourself at the beginning of your career, think about work with a non-profit.
Many non-profits employ people to help them run their operations. These people might hold full-time, part-time, contract, or freelance positions, and many of them even come with a paycheck. So, if you think you would thrive at a non-profit, start looking for these types of employment.
