You’ve finally given in and booked your first yoga class. Now you just need to pick up the right wardrobe for it. Keep reading to find out what you need.
After some careful consideration, you’ve decided to give it a go: you’ve decided to attend your first yoga class. While you’re excited, you’re also a little apprehensive. And in particular, you’re nervous about your attire.
How exactly are you supposed to dress for yoga? While there are no set rules, there are some types of clothing that are more common in yoga studios than are others. We’ll discuss them below.
Allow For Free Movement
As you probably know, there is a great deal of body movement involved with yoga. You’ll be stretching your arms, legs, neck, back, and otherwise. As such, you’re advised to wear clothing that can accommodate such movements.
Your first option is to wear baggy clothing. Basketball shorts, tank tops, and large t-shirts would suffice.
That said, the more popular option is to wear stretchy clothing. Take, for instance, these mens yoga shorts. They’re constructed with the use of elastic, allowing the wearer to move his legs with little restriction.
Other pieces to consider include yoga pants, spandex sports bras, and skin-tight undershirts. All of these pieces have a decent level of “give,” enabling the wearer to move with freedom.
Consider The Temperature
Whether you’re participating in hot yoga or not, you can bet on the yoga studio being fairly balmy. As such, you should lean toward wearing light, breathable, and airy clothing.
Some materials that will accommodate you include spandex, nylon, and polyester. These materials are not only breathable, but they also help to wick away sweat.
While you can wear other materials, you might find that they trap heat . . . or, they could become easily waterlogged by sweat. Neither one of these characteristics is desirable.
Gauge Your Modesty Level
When performing yoga, you’re bound to place your body in a number of different positions. Some of these positions could cause certain pieces of clothing to fall forward, exposing parts of your body.
If you don’t want this to happen, you’ll have to be strategic in the way you dress. In most cases, wearing tight-fitting clothing will suffice. If you’re mentally uncomfortable wearing tight-fitting clothing, you can get around the problem by wearing baggy clothing over tight-fitting undershirts.
Choose The Right Footwear
When it comes to yoga, there are two options for footwear. The first option is to go barefoot. The second option is to wear socks.
Most yoga participants opt for the former, as it allows for optimal feel and traction. However, if you’d rather go with the latter, you’re advised to buy specialized yoga socks. These socks are beneficial for two primary reasons: firstly, they’re highly breathable, and secondly, they’re equipped for maximum traction.
Time To Enjoy Your First Yoga Class
In all honesty, you can wear anything to your first yoga class. But if you really want to fit in (and feel comfortable), the clothing items reviewed above are ideal.
