Visiting a klondike website is a brilliant way to pass the time, distract you during boring meetings and build your online gaming skillset. Here you’ll learn the rules of how to play this addictive centuries-old game.
What Is Klondike?
Klondike is a popular card game in the solitaire family. It’s a one-player game which is usually played online and uses a single deck of 52 cards. No jokers are used in this card game.
Klondike was one of the first ever online games, being part of early computer operating systems. It has continued to grow in popularity ever since its emergence online in the 1990s. Klondike has become so popular in the United States that it has come to simply be called solitaire.
While online versions have attracted lots of attention, this solitaire game actually dates back to the late 19th century.
How To Play Klondike
To be successful at Klondike, the player is trying to sort all 52 cards into the four individual suits (clubs, spades, diamonds and hearts). The aim is to get the cards into ascending order (ace, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, jack, queen and king). The four piles are called foundations or houses.
28 cards are dealt into 7 different columns called tableaus. The leftmost column has just one card, the second has two, the third three and so on – until your seventh column has seven cards. Cards are dealt top to bottom.
The bottom card in each column will be turned face up, but no others should be. These should be face down or closed. The rest of the cards from the pack are kept in the top left corner of the screen.
Upturned cards can be moved between the tableau columns or to the foundation piles one at a time or in groups. The advantage to playing klondike online is that the system won’t allow you to move illegally, which helps you to understand the game.
If you can’t see a workable next step, you can click on the deck in the top left corner. This will deal a new card that you may have more luck with.
If any column is cleared, the empty space can be filled only by a king or columns that start with a king.
Once your four foundation piles are formed of aces to kings (in that order), you’ve won the game. If not, you can simply reset and try again.
