The Science of drinking
Since Covid-19 fell into our lives on the global scale commensurate with any pandemic, the social effects on being reduced to the confinement of one’s home and restricted access to normal functioning society has had huge implications on how to find pleasure and respite. Owing significantly to the fact that humans are social creatures and require a certain element of interaction with fellow beings, it’s clear the need for us to maintain friendships for our own betterment. Along with the fact that historically, the use of mind altering substances has formed meaningful connections in social rituals, it is relatively safe to see the importance of enjoying a drink with a friend in this maddening and impossibly confusing time.
Rick Andreoli Montreal, a mixologist and anthropologist, something Andreoli discovered whilst writing his Doctorate thesis on the social behavior around bars and the significance of alcohol, describes the perfect homemade whisky sour and how easy it is to concoct.
Gather up the following listed ingredients.
Typically a Whisky Sour is an American Cocktail known for its strong bite and sweet after taste. Therefore, a brand of Bourbon is considered best for this type of drink. Any type of bourbon is beneficial but its suggested that using an affordable Whisky is just as good as the other ingredient tastes are very present on the pallet. Try an Irish Blend for a subtler whisky presence in the drink.
One cup of water to one cup of casting sugar or Demerara on a slow boil will make 500 ml of, when cooled, a sugar syrup that is perfect blending for drinks and baking.
Egg white or Chick Pea Water
Normally the white of a single egg is used for each drink although recent discoveries on the use of Aquifer ( water from a chick pea can ) has the exact same protein qualities of the egg and eliminates the sulfurous scent that can sometimes present in a sour.
Use Mineral water to make ice and for added spice drop some cinnamon to water before it freezes. Makes for a warmer taste.
Juice 3 limes for each drink. It seems excessive but the sourness will carry through the foam of the Aquifer and the syrup will sweeten it.
For panache and extra sour bite to the sip, grate a little zest as garnish.
Home Bound Method
Add all these ingredients to a large lidded and sterilized jar. A jam jar looks nice and gives a prohibition style to the presentation. Shake ruinously for 1 minute and add a straw. Hey Presto… your own Homemade Whisky Sour.
The ease of making this drink is why it’s so fun to experiment and adjust flavors to suit your pallet. But enjoying a drink with a community of other Covid cocktail makers is the perfect antidote to the lockdown blues. Share tips online and consider hosting a digital drinks party. And always Drink Responsibly.
